A s educators, this is not an easy time
for any of us. C OV I D - 1 9
h a s completely c h a n g e d our lives in just under two months. It is difficult t o w a t c h the news as we see educators across the United States becoming sick - and losing their lives - because they are on the frontlines amid the
pandemic. Many of us will not have a chance to see students'
smiling faces together for the rest of this school year. To add more frustration, we are concerned about the health of our students, our families, and ourselves. We are facing
an uncertain crisis with schools closed and businesses shutting
down - and it is unclear how
long it will last.
One thing is clear despite all of the uncertainty. AEA members are stepping up against the odds to be there
for their students. I have heard
from many of you over the past few weeks. You spoke of the wonderful things being done to teach and serve kids in your school district. Every
day, I see pictures, videos, and posts about how AEA members
are still connecting with their
students, preparing their meals, and making sure they know we
care about them. It doesn't stop there. AEA members are also reaching out to people in their communities to offer educational resources for
parents and students, a helping hand, or simply a kind word.
I am so proud of the work you are doing! I am inspired by the way AEA's support professionals, teachers, administrators, and retirees have stepped up in this crisis and put their students first. I've even been told about college students stepping up and babysitting for free for those who need the help. Alabama's educators are
extraordinary!
I know this is not easy, but I have always believed our members go the extra mile for students every single day.
Stepping up during this current pandemic is no different.
We have faced adversity
before and despite how difficult it may seem; we will get through this together and united. Thank
you for all that you are doing
to keep your students learning.
Please continue to check in
with each other and take care of yourselves and families.
